The verdict

The bottom line: The Viltrox AF 28mm F4.5 FE is built around one idea: make a full-frame Sony camera as pocketable as possible. At 60g and 15.3mm thick, with autofocus and a built-in slide cap, it delivers on that goal. The trade-offs are a slow f/4.5 aperture, no filter support, and a startup routine you have to follow for autofocus to work.

What we like

  • Very small and light at 60g and 15.3mm thick
  • Autofocus with a VCM motor in a pancake-size body
  • Built-in slide cap means no lens cap to lose
  • Front coating Viltrox says resists water, dust and smudges
  • Firmware updates over USB-C or Bluetooth

What we don't

  • f/4.5 aperture limits low-light shooting and background blur
  • Cannot take external filters
  • Cap must be fully open before power-on or autofocus may fail
  • Not compatible with all older Sony NEX cameras
Best forSony E-mount shooters who want a near-pocketable everyday or travel lens and mostly shoot in good light.

How we researched

This review is based on Viltrox AF 28mm F4.5 (Sony E-Mount)'s official product page, its published specifications and pricing, and a comparison with leading alternatives in tech & gadgets. We have not used this product ourselves; scores reflect how it compares on paper.

What the Viltrox 28mm F4.5 FE is

This is an autofocus pancake lens for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, which Viltrox calls part of its "Chip" series. It also mounts on Sony APS-C bodies, where its field of view is closer to a 42mm lens on full frame.

Viltrox says it is the company's lightest and thinnest lens, at 60g and 15.3mm thick. The pitch is simple: turn a full-frame body into something that fits in a jacket pocket.

The box includes the lens, a lens cap, a user manual, a warranty card and packaging.

Key features and optics

The optical design uses 6 elements in 6 groups, including two ED elements and two aspherical elements. Viltrox says these reduce chromatic aberration and distortion, and claims sharpness holds from center to edge at f/4.5. Those are brand claims, so look for independent sample images before deciding.

The front element has what Viltrox calls an HD nano coating to cut reflections, plus a water- and smudge-resistant coating. The mount is aluminum alloy, and firmware can be updated by USB-C or Bluetooth.

Instead of a separate front cap, the lens has a built-in sliding cap opened with a button. It keeps the front covered in a pocket, but it also means there is no filter thread at all.

Quirks to know before buying

Viltrox's own FAQ flags a few habits. The cap must be slid fully open before you turn the camera on. If it is closed, the camera may not calibrate the lens and autofocus can fail to work.

The lens also makes a noise when shaken while powered off. Viltrox says this comes from the VCM focus motor and stops once the camera is on and the lens calibrates.

Check Viltrox's compatibility list before ordering, since the brand notes the lens does not support all Sony NEX series cameras.

Price and value

The product page we reviewed does not list a price, so check current pricing at the Viltrox store or major retailers.

Value depends on how much you prize size. If a tiny full-frame setup is the main goal, few autofocus lenses compete on thickness and weight. If you want a versatile all-around prime, a faster 24mm or 28mm lens gives more flexibility for a larger, heavier package.

Who it suits

Street, travel and casual shooters on compact bodies like the Sony A7C series will get the most from it. It pairs naturally with a small camera when you want minimal bulk.

It is a weaker fit for evening events, indoor work without much light, or portraits where you want strong background blur. Landscape shooters who use polarizers or ND filters will also run into the no-filter limitation.

FAQ

Does the Viltrox 28mm F4.5 work on Sony APS-C cameras?

Yes, it mounts on Sony E-mount APS-C bodies such as the A6700 and ZV-E10, and Viltrox shows sample images from both. On APS-C it frames roughly like a 42mm lens on full frame.

Can you use filters on the Viltrox 28mm F4.5?

No. Viltrox states the lens does not support external filters, because the front uses a built-in sliding cap instead of a filter thread.

Why does the Viltrox 28mm rattle when shaken?

Viltrox says the noise comes from its VCM focus motor and is normal when the camera is off. Once the camera powers on and the lens calibrates, the sound should stop.

Why is autofocus not working on my Viltrox 28mm?

Viltrox says the most common cause is turning the camera on before the cap is fully open, which can prevent calibration. Open the cap fully, power on, and confirm the lens is seated properly on the mount.

How much does the Viltrox 28mm F4.5 weigh?

Viltrox lists it at 60g and 15.3mm thick, making it the lightest and thinnest lens in its lineup.

Final verdict

The Viltrox AF 28mm F4.5 FE is a niche lens that does its niche well: it makes a full-frame Sony about as small as it can get with autofocus. If you shoot mostly in daylight and value portability above all, it is worth a close look. If you need speed in low light or filter support, a slightly larger f/2 or f/2.8 prime is the better buy.
