The verdict

The bottom line: On paper, the Insta360 X5 is one of the most complete consumer 360 cameras available, with larger sensors, a dedicated low-light mode, user-replaceable lenses and long rated battery life. Its strengths depend heavily on the Insta360 app and a capable phone, and it now sits below the newer X6 in Insta360's lineup.

What we like

  • Dual 1/1.28-inch sensors with 8K30 360 video and 72MP 360 photos
  • Replaceable lenses mean a scratched lens doesn't sideline the camera
  • Rated up to 208 minutes of recording in 5.7K24 Endurance Mode
  • Waterproof to 49ft without a case, rated down to -4°F
  • Deep app toolkit: reframing, AI Frame, InstaFrame 2.0 and virtual gimbal

What we don't

  • 8K tops out at 30fps; 60fps 360 video requires dropping to 5.7K
  • AI Frame and other heavy features need a fairly recent phone
  • 360 files use Insta360's INSV format and need its app or Studio to edit
  • The official page does not list a price, so value is hard to judge up front
Best forRiders, skiers, divers and travelers who want 360 footage they can reframe later and are comfortable editing in the Insta360 app.

How we researched

This review is based on Insta360 X5's official product page, its published specifications and pricing, and a comparison with leading alternatives in tech & gadgets. We have not used this product ourselves; scores reflect how it compares on paper.

What the Insta360 X5 is

The X5 is a pocket-size 360 camera with two lenses that record everything around you at once. You can then pick the angle you want later in the Insta360 app, or let the camera frame flat video for you as you shoot.

Insta360 calls it its "best value 360 camera." The company's lineup now also includes a newer flagship, the X6, so the X5 is positioned as the more established option rather than the top model.

It measures 46 x 124.5 x 38.2mm and weighs 200g (7.1oz), and comes in Midnight Black, with a Satin White limited edition also listed.

Image quality and key features

The headline hardware is a pair of 1/1.28-inch sensors, which Insta360 says are 144% larger than before, plus what it calls a Triple AI Chip system. The brand claims up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range. Video goes up to 8K30fps in 360, with 5.7K at up to 60fps and 4K at up to 120fps. Photos reach about 72MP, with DNG raw and an I-Log profile available.

PureVideo is Insta360's low-light mode, which the brand says uses AI noise reduction and dynamic range optimization; it runs up to 8K30 in 360 or 4K in single-lens mode. Insta360 also says Active HDR now works at 5.7K60.

For flat video, InstaFrame 2.0 outputs 4K footage straight from the camera, and single-lens mode turns the X5 into a 4K60 action camera. FlowState stabilization and 360 horizon lock are included, as is the "invisible selfie stick" effect that erases the stick from 360 shots.

Audio gets a new steel-mesh wind guard and four modes, including wind noise reduction and voice enhancement. The camera can also pair with the Mic Air, several motorcycle Bluetooth headsets from SENA and Cardo, and AirPods for dual-track audio.

Durability, battery and practical design

The biggest design change is replaceable lenses. If a lens is scratched or cracked, you pop it out and snap in a new one. Insta360 also claims a 100% improvement in drop resistance over the X4, though its own fine print still recommends lens protection outdoors.

The X5 is rated waterproof to 49ft (15m) on its own and to 197ft (60m) in the Invisible Dive Case, which Insta360 recommends for 360 underwater shooting to avoid stitching issues. The operating range is -4°F to 104°F.

The 2400mAh battery is rated for up to 208 minutes at 5.7K24 in Endurance Mode and 93 minutes at 8K30, in lab conditions. Insta360 says a 30W USB-C PD charger reaches 80% in 20 minutes. Batteries are swappable, and a new magnetic mount system aims to speed up setup changes.

Controls include twist-to-shoot on a selfie stick, gesture control, voice control and up to 90 seconds of pre-recording in 4K.

Software and ease of use

Much of the X5's appeal lives in software. The Insta360 app offers AI Frame, which suggests framed views from 360 footage, quick forward or selfie exports, dewarping and Shot Lab effects like Bullet Time, Starlapse and Sky Swap. Insta360 Studio covers Mac and Windows editing.

The tradeoff is hardware demands. The app needs at least an A12-chip iPhone or a Snapdragon 855-class Android phone, and AI Frame needs newer chips still. Insta360 notes older phones may control the camera but run processor-heavy features poorly.

The Insta360+ cloud service adds backup, sharing links and cloud editing. The page does not say what it costs, so check before counting on it.

Price and value

The official product page we reviewed does not list a price, so check current pricing at Insta360 or a retailer before you decide. Bundles for motorcycling, cycling, diving and snowboarding are offered, and those will change the total.

Value depends on how you shoot. If you will use reframing, the invisible selfie stick and long battery life, the X5 packs a lot into one device. If you mostly want forward-facing action footage, a traditional action camera may be simpler.

Insta360 also sells FlexiCare, a one-year accidental damage plan with two replacements. Given that the lenses are now replaceable, weigh whether you need both.

Who it suits

Motorcyclists and cyclists get the most targeted features: headset audio, Road Mode loop recording, automatic license plate blur and stats overlays from Garmin or Apple Watch.

Divers, skiers and travelers also benefit from the waterproofing, cold-weather rating and third-person shots. Casual users who don't want to edit can lean on InstaFrame 2.0 and quick exports, though they will get less out of the camera.

FAQ

Is the Insta360 X5 waterproof?

Yes. Insta360 rates it waterproof to 49ft (15m) without a case. For 360 footage underwater, the brand recommends the Invisible Dive Case, rated to 197ft (60m), to avoid stitching and refraction issues.

How long does the Insta360 X5 battery last?

Insta360 rates it at up to 208 minutes at 5.7K24 with Endurance Mode on, and 93 minutes at 8K30, in a 77°F lab. Real-world runtime will vary with settings and temperature.

Can you replace the lenses on the Insta360 X5?

Yes. The X5 has a replaceable lens design, so damaged lenses can be removed and swapped for new ones. Insta360 still recommends lens protection outdoors.

What phones work with the Insta360 X5 app?

iPhones with an A12 chip or newer on iOS 13 or later, and Android phones with Snapdragon 855, Kirin 990 or Exynos 2200 class chips or newer on Android 10 or later. AI Frame needs newer processors, so check Insta360's compatibility list.

Can the Insta360 X5 shoot normal non-360 video?

Yes. Single-lens mode records 4K60 like a standard action camera, and InstaFrame 2.0 outputs framed 4K flat video straight from the camera. MaxView offers a 170-degree field of view at 4K30.

What is the difference between the Insta360 X5 and X6?

Insta360 lists the X6 as its newer flagship 360 camera with Sony sensors and an OLED screen, while it calls the X5 its best value 360 camera. Compare current prices and specs if you are choosing between them.

Final verdict

The Insta360 X5 looks like a strong, well-rounded 360 camera, especially for riders, divers and travelers who will use reframing and its durability features. Confirm your phone supports the app features you want and check current pricing against the newer X6 before you buy.
