The verdict

The bottom line: On paper, the Insta360 Link 2 is one of the most fully featured webcams you can buy, pairing a 1/2-inch 4K sensor with a motorized gimbal that physically follows you around the room. The catch is that several headline features, like Natural Bokeh and background effects, depend on a fairly capable computer. If you present, teach or stream and move around, it is worth a close look.

What we like

  • Large 1/2-inch sensor, F1.8 aperture and 4K at 30fps or 1080p at 60fps
  • 2-axis gimbal physically pans and tilts to track a person or group
  • Three AI audio modes, including voice suppression for busy rooms
  • DeskView, whiteboard and portrait modes plus gesture control
  • Lens flips down automatically after 10 seconds of inactivity for privacy

What we don't

  • Natural Bokeh and background effects need specific GPUs or Apple Silicon
  • Windows on ARM is not supported by the Link Controller software
  • Connects over USB 2.0, and the Virtual Camera does not support 50 or 60fps
  • The page lists no price, so value is hard to judge against rivals
Best forTeachers, presenters, streamers and remote workers who move around while on camera and want automatic tracking with strong built-in audio.

How we researched

This review is based on Insta360 Link 2's official product page, its published specifications and pricing, and a comparison with leading alternatives in tech & gadgets. We have not used this product ourselves; scores reflect how it compares on paper.

What the Insta360 Link 2 is

The Link 2 is a 4K webcam built around a small 2-axis gimbal. Instead of only cropping digitally, the camera head physically pans and tilts to keep you in frame as you move.

Insta360 sells it alongside the Link 2C, a standard, non-gimbal model with the same sensor and video specs. The 2C keeps you in frame by zooming and reframing rather than moving.

Both are aimed at video meetings, online teaching and live streaming. Insta360 says the Link 2 is officially Zoom certified and works with major platforms including Microsoft Teams and Twitch.

Video and audio

The Link 2 uses a 1/2-inch sensor with an F1.8 aperture and a 26mm-equivalent focal length. It records up to 4K at 30fps, or 1080p and 720p at up to 60fps, with HDR supported at every resolution and frame rate.

Insta360 claims strong low-light performance thanks to the larger sensor and its image processing, and it uses phase detection autofocus that works from about 4 inches away. These are brand claims; we have not tested them.

On audio, Insta360 says AI noise canceling filters background noise. There are three modes: Voice Focus for solo use, Voice Suppression to filter out nearby voices, and Music Balance for streams with background music. Keep in mind your meeting platform may cap resolution regardless of the camera.

Tracking and smart features

AI tracking can follow a single person or a group, and a pause-track area lets you set boundaries where the camera stops following you. That fence feature is exclusive to the Link 2.

DeskView mode tilts the camera down automatically to show your desk, which the 2C can only do with a manual mount adjustment. Whiteboard mode squares off and sharpens a whiteboard, and portrait mode records native 9:16 video when the camera is rotated on a tripod, which is sold separately.

Hand gestures can start tracking, zoom and enable whiteboard mode. The Link Controller desktop app and a phone app handle manual framing, filters, virtual backgrounds and one-click makeup. Paired with the separately sold Insta360 Wave speakerphone, the Link 2 can switch focus between speakers.

System requirements and setup

This is where shoppers should read carefully. The baseline is an Intel i5 fifth-gen or later CPU with 8GB of RAM, but some advanced features need a tenth-gen i5 and 16GB.

Natural Bokeh requires an NVIDIA GTX 1080, RTX 2060 or newer GPU on Windows, or an M1 Mac or later; AMD GPUs and Intel Macs are not supported for it. Background blur and replacement may have issues on some AMD GPUs, and Windows on ARM is not supported at all by Link Controller.

Mounting is simple: a magnetic mount clips to laptops and monitors, and a 1/4-inch thread accepts a tripod. The Link 2 draws 5V/1A over USB-C and comes with a USB-C to USB-A adapter.

Price and value

The product page we reviewed does not list a price, so check current pricing at Insta360 or major retailers before deciding.

The value case rests on what you will actually use. If you need physical tracking, desk and whiteboard views, and good built-in audio, the Link 2 bundles a lot into one device.

If you mostly sit still on calls, the Link 2C offers the same sensor and resolution without the gimbal, and a simpler 4K webcam may cover your needs for less.

Who it suits

The Link 2 makes the most sense for teachers, trainers and presenters who walk around or use a whiteboard, and for streamers who want auto framing and vertical video without extra gear.

It is less suited to people on older PCs, ARM-based Windows laptops, or anyone who wants a plug-and-play camera with no companion software. Many of its best tricks run through Link Controller and the Virtual Camera.

FAQ

What is the difference between the Insta360 Link 2 and Link 2C?

Both share the same 1/2-inch sensor and 4K video specs. The Link 2 has a 2-axis gimbal that physically follows you, automatic DeskView tilt and pause-track areas, while the smaller Link 2C uses digital auto framing and a manual privacy shutter.

Does the Insta360 Link 2 work with Mac?

Yes. Link Controller supports macOS 11.0 or later, though the Virtual Camera and background effects need macOS 13.0 or later. Natural Bokeh requires an M1 chip or newer and does not work on Intel Macs.

Does the Insta360 Link 2 work with Zoom and Microsoft Teams?

Insta360 says the Link 2 is officially Zoom certified and works with major platforms including Microsoft Teams and Twitch. Actual video resolution depends on each platform's own limits.

Do I need software to use the Insta360 Link 2?

Basic video works as a standard webcam, and some features like gesture control work without an app. Advanced options such as Natural Bokeh, background effects, smart whiteboard settings and manual gimbal control run through the Link Controller desktop software.

Does the Insta360 Link 2 have a privacy cover?

The Link 2 does not use a shutter; instead, the gimbal flips the lens down after 10 seconds of inactivity, or you can adjust it manually. The Link 2C has a physical shutter.

Can the Insta360 Link 2 record vertical video?

Yes. Insta360 says you can rotate the camera on a tripod to shoot native 9:16 video at up to 4K. The tripod is sold separately.

Final verdict

The Insta360 Link 2 stands out for combining a large 4K sensor, a physical tracking gimbal and capable AI audio in one compact webcam. Confirm your computer meets the requirements for the features you care about, and compare it with the Link 2C if you do not need the gimbal. For presenters and streamers who move around, it is a strong pick.
