How we researched
This review is based on Insta360 GO Ultra's official product page, its published specifications and pricing, and a comparison with leading alternatives in tech & gadgets. We have not used this product ourselves; scores reflect how it compares on paper. What the Insta360 GO Ultra is
The GO Ultra is a two-piece camera system. The Standalone Camera is a small magnetic module that weighs 52.9g and measures about 1.8 x 1.8 x 0.7 inches. It snaps into the Action Pod, a 108.5g dock with a 2.5-inch flip touchscreen and a larger battery.
You can shoot with the two together like a compact action camera, or pull the camera out and wear it on the included Magnet Pendant or Magnetic Easy Clip for eye-level POV footage. With the camera mounted elsewhere, the Action Pod works as a remote viewfinder and controller.
Insta360 positions it as its flagship lightweight camera, replacing the GO 3S at the top of the GO line. It comes in Arctic White and Midnight Black.
Image quality and key features
The headline change is the sensor. Insta360 says the 1/1.28-inch sensor has 221% more light-sensitive area than the GO 3S's 1/2.3-inch sensor, and pairs it with a 5nm AI chip it claims has 50 times the computing power. The company also claims 200% more low-light detail versus the GO 3S. Those are brand comparisons, not independent results.
Video tops out at 4K60, with 2.7K at 120fps and 1080p at 240fps for slow motion. There is a PureVideo mode for low light, Active HDR, I-Log, a 180Mbps maximum bitrate and H.264 or H.265 encoding. Note that Active HDR and PureVideo top out at 4K30. Photos go up to 50MP, with DNG support.
Other features include FlowState stabilization with 360 Horizon Lock, a 2x Clarity Zoom at 4K, an ambient light sensor for color accuracy, voice and gesture control, a twist-to-switch portrait and landscape mode, and stats overlays from Strava, Garmin or Apple Watch.
The camera also has an AI voice assistant that can answer questions and translate conversations. Insta360 notes it is powered by Google Gemini, requires an internet connection and cloud services, and only starts processing voice when you activate it.
Battery, storage and durability
Insta360 rates the Standalone Camera at 70 minutes at 1080p and 60 minutes at 4K, and the camera plus Action Pod at 200 minutes at 1080p and 170 minutes at 4K. Those figures were measured in a 77°F lab at 1080p24 and 4K30 with Endurance Mode on and the screen and Wi-Fi off, so expect less at 4K60 or with the screen in use.
Charging claims are strong: 80% in 12 minutes for the camera and 80% in 18 minutes for the Action Pod with a 30W PD charger. The camera charges only through the Action Pod, so you need the Pod with you to top it up.
Storage moves to a removable microSD card, supporting up to 2TB, which fixes one of the main complaints about the GO 3S's built-in storage. You will need to buy a card.
The camera is rated IPX8 waterproof to 33ft, and Insta360 recommends its AquaLens accessory for best underwater image quality. The Action Pod is only IPX4 splashproof. A Dive Case extends depth to 197ft. Apple Find My support can help locate a lost camera.
Price and value
The product page we reviewed does not list a price, so check current pricing from Insta360 or authorized retailers. There are two bundles, Standard and Creator.
The Standard Bundle includes the Action Pod, Standalone Camera with lens guard, Magnet Pendant, Quick Release Safety Cord, USB-C cable and Magnetic Easy Clip. Many of the mounts shown in Insta360's marketing, including the Flexi Strap Mount, Easy Clip Headband, Ring Remote, Sticky Tabs and AquaLens, are sold separately.
Insta360 also offers optional FlexiCare replacement coverage and an extended warranty. Moments Pro, the AI auto-editing feature, mentions a free trial and annual subscription tiers in the fine print, so some AI editing may carry ongoing costs.
Who it suits
The GO Ultra makes the most sense for people who want footage from angles a normal action camera cannot easily reach: worn on a shirt, clipped to a cap, stuck to a fridge or strapped to handlebars. Parents get a dedicated Toddler Titan mode, and cyclists and runners get stats overlays and wearable mounts.
It is less ideal if you want one rugged, fully waterproof body you never have to think about. The two-piece design means managing a splashproof dock and a waterproof camera, and the small camera's own battery is limited compared with a full-size action cam.
If you already own a GO 3S and are happy with 4K30 and fixed storage, the upgrade is mostly about low-light quality, 4K60 and the SD slot.

FAQ
Is the Insta360 GO Ultra waterproof?
The Standalone Camera is rated IPX8 waterproof to 33ft (10m), but the Action Pod is only IPX4 splashproof. Insta360 sells a Dive Case that extends depth to 197ft and recommends the AquaLens for underwater shooting.
How long does the GO Ultra battery last?
Insta360 rates the camera alone at 70 minutes at 1080p and 60 minutes at 4K, and 200 or 170 minutes with the Action Pod. These were measured in lab conditions with Endurance Mode on and the screen and Wi-Fi off, so real-world times will likely be shorter.
What is the difference between the GO Ultra and the GO 3S?
The GO Ultra has a larger 1/1.28-inch sensor versus 1/2.3-inch, shoots 4K60 instead of 4K30, and uses removable microSD storage instead of fixed internal storage. Insta360 also lists longer run times, faster charging, a wider 156° field of view and a larger 2.5-inch screen.
Does the Insta360 GO Ultra need an SD card?
Yes. The page lists a microSD card as required, with support for cards up to 2TB. Plan to buy a fast card separately.
Does the GO Ultra work with iPhone and Android?
Yes. The app supports iPhones with an A12 chip or newer on iOS 13 or later, and Android phones with Snapdragon 855, Kirin 990, Exynos 2200 or newer chips running Android 10 or above. Older phones may connect but AI features may not perform well.
Can the GO Ultra be used as a webcam or for live streaming?
The product page specs do not list a live streaming mode. If streaming is important to you, confirm with Insta360 before buying.
Final verdict
Based on its specs and Insta360's claims, the GO Ultra looks like the strongest tiny POV camera in the GO line, fixing the GO 3S's biggest limits with a larger sensor, 4K60 and removable storage. Check the current price, budget for a microSD card and any mounts you need, and treat the battery figures as best-case. If hands-free, go-anywhere footage is your priority, it is well worth a close look.
